What it is
Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, following the sciatic nerve. It is usually caused by an irritated nerve root in the lower back, often from a disc or a tight, sensitive joint.
Signs and symptoms
- Pain radiating from the back or buttock into the leg
- Pins-and-needles, numbness or a burning feeling
- Pain that worsens with sitting, bending or coughing
- Weakness or heaviness in the leg
